Subject: Team3S: Getrag Tranny Question:  Anyone else having theirs replaced at the moment?

Hi everyone,

Once again, my Getrag transmission is being replaced (this will be my 4th
one).  Chrysler claims that the tranny cases are no longer being made and
that "mine must be sent in so that all the internal parts can be replaced".
Frankly, I think this is a load of crap since I got a new tranny (including
case) less than a month ago for my last replacement.

Is anyone else having their transmission replaced at the moment?  If so, are
you running into the same situation?

Wishing they would just total it and give me the $12k,

Kevin,

How do you drive the car? Are you launching your car from the stop position?
What parts have been replaced in the tranny? Did they tell you what is wrong
this time?

The only parts that are not available are the syncrnos.  All other parts and
shafts are available, new. I would let your dealer know about M&D Auto.
They would love to have the resource to get rebuilt trannys.

If you want, I can give you the name of the tranny shop and a person to talk
to regarding advice, help and some of his resources. He can get all the
parts except the syncrnos.

Good luck. If you are launching the car, STOP. All four wheels grabbing and
the tranny don't work together too well.

There are  'NO' rebuilt trannies with new parts other than those provided by
Getrag/CRS. There are bearing and seal sets available along with output
shafts and I think the concentric shaft. No new gears, shift forks intermediate
shafts, cases, synchros etc are available. Nor are there specs available to
determine whether or not the new bearings require new shims etc.

I had a leak in my transfer case. A shaft also had to be replaced.

I took my car to Cottman transmission and they took the whole tranny and
transfer case appart and put it back together with new seals. I had them
also put in Redline fluids, which I provided, back into the transfer case,
tranny and rear end.

Hi All,
  I have a question about the stock alarm system.  I have a '92 VR-4.
Sometimes the alarm will go off when I open the rear hatch.  It does not
always do this, perhaps one time in twenty.  This has happened after
both long and short periods of parking (10 minutes to a few hours).

other data points to consider
1) I usually watch when I get out to see that the green security light
flashes.
2) The alarm system seems to work properly for the driver and passengers
doors.

Have you seen this behavior in your car?
Do you know of a cause or solution?

Thanks

The reason I've found is that you don't turn the key all the way when you
open the hatch.
If I turn my key just enough to open the hatch, 50% of the time the alarm
will go off. If I turn it till the key stops, it never goes off. I think I
remember someone saying that the switch that disables the alarm is in the
lock mechanism and if you don't turn the key all the way, sometimes you won't
hit the switch.
Good luck.

The tranny replacements have not been called for because of abuse...  when I
*did* have the car many months ago, I went easy on it off the line (no
clutch dumps).  I am not exactly sure how the previous owner treated it (had
64k miles when I bought it).

The reason I've gone through so many is this... I originally brought the car
in to have the 1-2 syncro checked (was grinding on fast shifts).  It was
determined to be bad, so they had to replace the transmission...  The 1st
one they recieved (took about 1 1/2 months to get) had a crack in the case
because a bolt had been tightened too much.  So I had to wait another 3 to 4
weeks for another new one (now my 3rd tranny).  This one worked OK, but was
determined to have a seal problem -- it leaked everywhere I went.  So now
I'm waiting on my 4th one (been a month already).  The repair bill
(including a few other major components) is now over $19,000...  what a
waste, that's a C4 Vette conv't right there...

Len,

My current tranny is leaking because of a bad seal and I was told the whole
thing had to be replaced.  I think in my case it is because the tranny is
still under warranty, so the dealership is liable for it...and since the
fluid level was about half-full when I brought it in, it has probably been
damaged to the point where they'd be replacing it anyway within the
12mth/12,000miles.

Step 1 is the most expensive - Plus sizing to 17" or 18"(very
pricey) lightweight wheels, and tires to match.  Check
www.tirerack.com .  With the FWD NT's, I think you'll find better
handling and control with any wheel-rubber combo if you overinflate
by 8 to 10 lbs in front, 6 to 8 lbs in rear.  I use 43/37 for
average driving (46/40 for high-speed and freeway driving) on Nitto
Extreme Performance 450s.  Try it now on your stock tires > +8F/+4R
and you'll like the result.  I use a -1 toe setting, and I've almost
eliminated understeer...

Step 2 is the most popular and relatively inexpensive upgrade to
Eibach Pro-Kit Progressive Springs ($220 + install)...  Part
#2810.140.  They lower the car only 1", and as they say on the
Eibach site www.eibach.com :  "The Eibach Pro-Kit sport lowering
spring set improves your vehicle's looks and performance.  Pro-Kit
springs lower the vehicle's center of gravity, reducing body roll in
the turns, dive under braking, squat
during acceleration and give the car a more solid secure feel at all
times."  Lots of us on the list have them, and I agree with what
Eibach says.  They really are terrrific...  See our FAQ pages about
the quirky install, though...  www.stealth-3000gt.st/FAQ.htm

Forrest

Subject: Team3S: Re: RPS Turbo Carbon Clutch - Anyone like it?

I have used "standard" RPS turbo clutch for years and the only problem is
that with very high horsepower and all-out drag launches with
some slip (not sidestepping the clutch) they can slip sometimes.
This on 600+hp, plus a little NOS, and is what I used for the
10 second/128mph run in 1997.

After a slip, they do recover, and can work a very long time.
The frustration is that you don't know when it might slip on
a max-effort pass.
The advantage to this is that it has just enough grip to work,
but the capability to slip a little which is easier on the driveline
than a sudden, snappingly direct engagement clutch.  Balancing
the amount of slip/smooth engagement with the ultimate amount
of GRIP needed is hard, and varies with driving style.  I am
using RPS half-carbon, half-organic disc now that was the "replacement
upgrade" for the "full-carbon" disc that tended to slip for some;
this half-half disc works, but did slip for me once and I've taken it
easy on it since.  RPS just sent me a 6-carbon-puck clutch on a
metal, sprung hub to replace this with; will be changing it over the
next month or so, I hope, to see how it works.  RPS says this
definitely has more grip than the half-carbon puck, half-organic
disc I now have in.

I am hoping to avoid going to a ceramic/punisher disc if possible,
such as the Broward disc--which holds, but is harsh.
