Subject: Team3S:
Need some help tuning my VPC...
Well I had my 15G's installed (I'm a
wimp). I drove it around for a day
to make sure that the install was good and
it was. I then installed an
HKS fuel pump, RC Engineering 550cc injectors, a
VPC, and a GCC. I have a
few problems:
1. I have a vacuum leak that I
can't seem to locate. There's a hissing
sound that's coming from my plenum
somewhere around the factory MAP
sensor (right above where it says "ECI
Multi" on the plenum). I pulled
the factory MAP and plugged the hole but
I could still hear it. I've
searched and felt around and sprayed a little bit
of intake cleaner on
the fittings and hose connections to no avail. Any ideas
on how to locate
it? I retorqued the intake plenum bolts, throttle body
bolts, and
re-seated the rear turbo outlet pipe just to be sure they were
on
correctly.
2. My VPC is possessed by the devil! The thing is always
lean at less
than 1900 rpms. As soon as it hits 1900-2200 it goes pig rich.
I've
played with it and got it to cycle and managed to get the short term
fuel
trims to around 0% at idle. I've been able to do this in
every
combination of the idle and gain controls (rich gain/lean idle,
lean
gain/rich idle, and both in the mid range). Only problem is when I
turn
the car off and restart it the fueling goes back to straight lean and
it
barley maintains idle. I've also cranked the car up once where it
was
straight lean and the fuel trims were maxed out trying to richen up.
I
cranked up the VPC trying to richen it and the MAF signal went up like
it
should until I had the VPC maxed out rich. The O2's just sat there
at
.020-.040. Fuel trims didn't budge...Keep in mind that I've been
leaving
the GCC at 0%. I've also disconnected the MAF sensor and removed
the
honeycombs. The VPC MAP sensor has its own boost source on the
plenum.
3. My car idles like a top fuel dragster now. You know, where
they surge
at idle from the supercharger?
4. I have no throttle
response. If I give it any gas in neutral it falls
flat on its face and has a
hard time getting past 1900 rpm. when it comes
back down to idle it usually
drops too far and almost dies.
I know it's a weird problem and every
car's different but does anyone
have any ideas on this? Any similar
experiences? Please speak up! I
really hope that vacuum leak is throwing the
fueling off. But it sure
sounds like I've got more problems than just
that!
It sucks having new toys that don't play well
together...

the 3000/Stealths that I found a

look at/drive the red '93 this

it. It has never been licensed,

deals cars every once in a while. It's
sporting a dealer plate right
now. It's his wife's car, and has never been

everything is perfect on this car. It looks and drives
just like it
came off the showroom. Options include sunroof, CD changer,
power
windows, seats etc, leather, and probably a bunch I don't know.
Kelly
Blue Book shows it retailing at $12,920.
As much as I want this car,
it sure is pricey. I doubt that I'd ever find
another that is in this

Take it! Its the best year made, stronger
engine/trans and still has some of
the fancy gizmos and no obdII system. Plus
with only 35 thous miles you cant
beat that. But you never did put in the
price he is asking for it??? Make
sure you take it to a reputable shop and
have the thing strip searched
before buying just to make sure everything is
good on it! Good luck :)

How do you drive a car for 35,000 miles and never
license it? That
sounds really suspicious to me. I think I'd at
least be a tad nervous
and do an extra intense check to make sure that
everything is kosher on
the car. If the guy used dealer tags and other
under the table things
to avoid registering the car, perhaps he did some
other questionable
things .... perhaps even rolling back the Odometer from
135,000 miles.
I'm not suggesting that he did this or anything, but if
something seems
unusual it's usually in your best interest to REALLY make
sure that
there is a legitimate reason for it.
You're right, good
clean 3S cars are hard to find and getting harder
with each passing day, BUT
THEY ARE OUT THERE. It took me 8 months to
find my 1994 Stealth TT
..... but I was extremely picky and wanted one
with less than 25,000 on the
Odometer ... ended up finding one with
10,000 on it, so like I said, they are
out there. If this car looks
like it's exactly what you're looking for
and it checks out
mechanically, and the price is right, do it. But
don't jump too fast
just cause you're afraid you'll never find one .... they
are out there!
Right now on the net there are dozens of good clean 3S cars
in a variety
of conditions (I was helping someone else find one a while
back.)

Well, tried to tune it some more
today. The only way it would idle and
accelerate from a stop was at full rich
settings. The Air/Fuel ratio was
still way lean until you hit 2200-2400. The
it would go straight rich and I'd
hit fuel cut. I brought it home an tried to
tune the short term fuel trims
with the laptop and no matter what I did with
the VPC and GCC the trims and
the MAF signal wouldn't change. Last night I
could adjust the fuel trims at
will with the VPC. I haven't changed anything
since last night...I also
pulled my plugs and from driving around today
they're fouled. GREAT!!!
My possessed by the Devil theory stands. Give me
some input guys. If I don't
fix this I see an ARC in my
future....

Ahhhh!!! Last night I was educating a Mustang when I floored my
car
through 2nd
gear. I took it to redline and as I pushed in the clutch I
noticed
what sounded like
a small backfire. I figured I hit the rev
limiter for a second, no
big deal. Upon
giving the car gas again
there was a big lack of power, the car was
backfiring as
though it was
flooded (it's happened a few times when I hit the rev
limiter) and
I
noticed smoke, yikes. In my past experience, when the car
floods
like this, it clears
up quickest by letting it coast in gear.
That didn't seem to help
this time and I had
to limp it to a parking
lot. The car will idle, barely. It's
extremely rough,
maybe
300 rpms and it's making LOTS of smoke. It was dark, but the
smoke
looked gray and
smells EXTREMELY rich, my eyes were burning.
Sitting in neutral it
will rev up to
about 3k rpms without a
problem. With the pedal down, the engine
will hit 3k rpms
then fall
and die. The oil level seems ok, I'm going back to check
the color of
the
smoke and coolant level soon. I never saw an idiot light come
on.
Just in case it's
related I'll mention that I believe I have an
exhaust manifold leak.
I've noticed a
few times that I smelled exhaust
from under the hood and last night
the majority of
the smoke was coming
from under the engine bay. I'm wondering if
the smoke was just
so
visible because it was extremely rich, but it definitely seemed
that more
came from
the engine bay than the exhaust tips.
I
recall hearing that it's bad to run high injector duty cycle.
Due to lack
of
funds I've been running 100% IDC under WOT for months now.
I'm
thinking that one or
more of the injectors is damaged, maybe stuck
open, but I'm not sure
how to easily
diagnose this. I thought about
pulling each spark plug individually
hoping that it'd
run better on 5
cylinders, but then I thought that it'd probably be
worse if the
injector
was wide open and there was no spark. If it's a mechanical
problem with
the
injector itself, is there any way to measure it
electronically?
I'm about 2 hours from home right now and
my resources are
limited. I'd hate to
flat-bed it all the way to
Altered Atmosphere (again) for $225
especially if it might
be something
relatively simple.
FYI, my mods are as follows:
K&N
filter
Blitz BOV
AVC-R (old style) set to 1 atmosphere and 76% BADC
ATR
down pipe with no main cat
Gutted precats
Custom 3" cat-back with no
mufflers
Any help would be greatly
appreciated.
thanks,
Jason

The obvious first things to check under
these situations -- the Y-pipe and
the turbo pipes on the pressure
side. Basically, check everything on the
pressurized side of the system
for leaks as a start.

You could also shove it into the dash around
the stereo with some work, or
if you get a smaller stereo head, you could
"confabricate" something that
looks decent...
Some people
put them into one of the A/C vents. I had mine there for a

I prefer to trust a good old analog boost

forget it. My AFC lives in the

AVC-R
There's only one feature I ever use on the AVC-R, and that is to
switch
betwixt two boost presets. This can be done fairly easily once
you are used
to it with the unit facing upwards in the console.
I like
gawking at the moving LEDs and stuff, but it really isn't necessary
from an
operational standpoint especially since you have a boost gauge that
is
already presumably within your view.

Jason's car is sick - needs help!
Jason,
If
you were in Harrisonburg when this happened you
can use my garage and I'll
help you look at it if you want.
Give me a call if that's where you broke
down.

Team3S: tick
I had the same problem with my 92 Stealth RT TT. I changed
the Oil with
Quakerstate Synthetic 10W30, and haven't heard a tick since.
Also use Fram
Filters.

Suspension questions (and note to admins)
I have a few of questions
regarding front suspension maintainance.
1. Are the wheel studs splined,
thus requiring a machine shop to remove and
replace them?
2. When
changing out the front stabilizer bar bushings, how do I get to the
top bolt?
The steering rack boot appears to be in the way.
Are these as easy to replace
as the manual indicates? Anything to watch out
for?
3. When I remove
the hub and knuckle assembly, how do I loosen that
funky-shaped nut on the
tie rod? Do I have to have that special tool? And
should I follow the
manual's instructions and loosten but not remove the
nut?
4. When
reassembling the hubs, what tool should I use to seat the oil seals?
Note
to Bob Forrest and the Admins:
I'll try and borrow my friend's digital
camera, and take pics of the repair.
If you feel that this could be added to
the Team 3S website, then I would be
willing to submit the pics and
procedure.
Matt
