Attn: All VR4 owners that like to break Tranny's
Well, I am now in
the towing business on the beach here in SPI, TX.
Anyways, For me, it's only
for fun, but you have to have a towing permit
here (only 5 available, and I
got one) And I was talking with one of the
other guys that tow about
what works and what doesn't on the beach. Of
course, big tires
work. Everyone knows that. One warning I was given was
that if we
went with huge tires, we had a good chance of breaking trannys
and transfer
cases. I then realized that maybe ll the vr-4 people are going
about
this the wrong way. Why not put as small as possible tires and
wheels
on a vr-4 to minimize torque to the drivetrain.
Think about -
the math works (I don't feel like actually showing it, but
someone feel free
to)
If you want to accelerate at a certain rate, you have to apply torque
to the
axle correct? If you have larger tires, you have to apply more
torque to
that same axle, putting more stress on the transaxle. So go
to smaller
tires & you have to apply less torque to accelerate at the
same rate.

Bad drivers break things, not necessarily bad
equipment choice.

Before anyone sends money to anyone else, I
highly recommend you have the
name, telephone numebr and business address of
the vendor so you can follow
up or even find out if they are
reputable.
I got burned on a Ground Control group purchase through a
similar sort of
deal, and I actually did follow the precautions.
Without the information
though, you have little to go on. Buyer
beware.

Hi Rich,
Are you using your
stock rotors?? If so you'll see a noticable decrease
in those nasty
heat cracks. You'll still get them, but they won't be as
bad. I
went to the Porsche dealer and did some measurements on the
real 993 TT
rotor. It is a two piece for $200. Their hub and bolt
pattern is
different, but I'm sure I can build a hat to fit our hub and
their
rotor. That's a project for this season. But then again,
the
Supra rotor is only $52, is directional, well vented and just a
tad
larger than our stock '94.
Great. We can't mail in the
registration BEFORE March 30, so send me
your snailmail address and I'll send
you the application and the bimmer
info.
cost is $240BMW or
@$275 non-member.
If you are not a member, I'd suggest you join as you
get a great
magazine, schedule of ALL events, and a price reduction of almost
the
cost of membership. I usually do several bimmer events each year so
the
membership is cost effective. Goto

It is possible to remove the oil and
water lines to the turbos....you just
have a couple of blind connections that
you'll disconnect by feel and not by
sight. I'm not sure that
they can be removed without removing the turbos
though. I am on my

Team3S: Porterfields and Wheels
Hey all...
As a anniversary
present I'm sending my husband to the Thunderhill Street School
this April.
In order to do the school we need to get some new break pads and
rotors for
the front of my '95 VR4. Everyone seems to be agreed that
Porterfields are
the way to go... does anyone know of a Bay Area dealer that we
can get them
from quickly? If not, who is the best mail order retailer to buy
them
from?
Second... does anyone have a set of 17" VR4 rims (not bent)
that we could borrow
for the weekend? (No I'm serious!) You'd have to be in
the Bay Area to make this
work... but maybe even do a weekend swap. We've got
18x10 tires on my 18" wheels
and the tread is good, but I don't want to
use up the tread I've got and have to
spend the money to buy a new set of
tires any sooner than absolutely necessary.
We can get a set of 17"
A032Rs rather inexpensively, but don't have the unbent
wheels to put them
on!
Those that may be interested in the Street School. This is an SCCA
sanctioned
school run on the SCCA's Thunderhill course. The next Street
School is April
29th. Its only $175 for the entire day. The URL is
http://www.thunderhill.com/school.html
If anyone would like to meet up let us know. As of yesterday there were
some
spots left.
Thanks in advance!

Nice present! Just go
to
http://www.porterfieldbrakes.com.
Get the
cryogenically treated rotors. The treatment takes a few days so
the complete
turnaround time is almost a couple of weeks.
John
Christian highly recommends track pads for the track. If you do the
BBQ
treatment, they should last a few events.
Have fun,
Ken

Re: Team3S: Rotors: turn or replace?
Thanks to all who responded with
input. A few points of clarification:
I am convinced that the
rotors need turning because 1) they shudder when braking
at high speed; 2)
the left-rear brake makes an annoying Doom Imp noise under
soft braking, once
per wheel revolution; 3) I'm changing pad compounds (Stillen
Metal Matrix
-> Mitsu -> Abex -> Porterfield).
None of the rotors are heavily
grooved, and the fronts were turned 30k miles ago
(only a tiny bit was
removed from the surface to remove slight warpage since I
wasn't certain
cutting was even permitted at all in Germany at that point). As
I said
in my previous post, I am surprised at the expense (Extreme
Motorsports
charged me far less), but new rotors are at least three times as
much so turning
seems like the way to go at this point.
Changing the
pads is easy and is something I have done several times now (after
Roger
showed me the first time). I also have two speed bleeders (not
installed
yet) and know that partially bleeding the system is not
difficult. However, I
currently have a mix of stock (DOT 4, I guess)
and DOT 5.1 synthetic brake fluid
in the system and would feel more
comfortable if everything were flushed and
replaced (though maybe not $250
more comfortable). My understanding is that a
full flush allows air
into the system and I'm not sure how to handle that.
So, that's the
deal. I'm still looking at a pricey rotor turning, but I'll
cancel the
bleed portion if folks think it's not worth it (or if Roger and I can
knock
it out).
-Jim
P.S.- Next on the agenda: install 1G BPV and figure
out why the car is wallowing
in curves.
