Subject: Team3S: Used SL vs. a used VR4 w/Extended Warrantee

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to make up my mind on whether to buy a used SL or a used VR4. A
friend of mine who owns a mechanic shop is warning me to stay away from the
VR4s due to repair costs. However, I'm thinking I'll find a good extended
warrantee and buy a VR4 anyway. :)
So, does anyone have any personal recommendations on companies that offer
extended warrantees? And any comments on spending more money for an older
car just for another 100 HP?

If I get the SL, my friend says I can get a computer upgrade and maybe get
another 20-30 HP out of the engine. True?

Also, I still need to check on insurance costs between the two models.
Another alternative is to get a newer VR4 with less chance of repairs.
However, here in Southern California, the major depreciation on the VR4s
seems to stop around the '94 to '93 models. If I buy one any newer, I'm
looking at loosing up to $6,000 a year in depreciation alone (money which I
would rather spend vacationing in Europe with my wife and kids).

You get more than 100HP with the VR4.  You get all-wheel-drive, all-wheel-steering, nicer wheels (although your opinion may vary), a functional rear spoiler, automatic climate control (not sure if that came on the SL or not), electronically-controlled suspension, and the requisite higher insurance.

>If I get the SL, my friend says I can get a computer upgrade and maybe get

Doubtful that you would see that much increase.  Also, since it is a FWD car, torque steer increases with the amount of HP you put to the front wheels.  If you did get a computer upgrade, keep in mind that the prices run in the $800-1000 range for the modification - which would narrow the price gap between the SL and VR4.

You just have to decide what you want out of the car.  Do you want a nice car with reasonable performance, or do you want a pavement-scorching sportscar?  For not much money you can get another 40-50HP out of the VR4 as well (manual or electronic boost controller).

This all depends on the owner.  I am definitely not satisifed with the stock
powre of a SL, but I am not satisfied with the stock power of a VR-4 either.
I own a SL, and am very proud of it 99% of the time.  it's that 1% where new
T/A's and such want to race, and I have to resort to Nitrous Oxide to win.
I'd rather not, but whatever it takes.  NOS also isn't for many people.
There is no good computer upgrade for the 3/S, unless you wanna spend $1000
or more, then benefits are marginal at best on a stock car.

#If I get the SL, my friend says I can get a computer upgrade and maybe get

Although some will differ, insurance is undoubtedly higher on a vr-4 than a
SL...

The Getrag Transmissions are the biggest cause of failure in the '91-'93
models.  Buy a '94 VR-4 if possible - oldest, cheapest, best reliability.
You should be able to get a '94 VR-4 for 15-22 thousand - big spread, but it
depends on your area.  Or you can save money, buy a '92/'93 and save the
extra money for potential repair costs.

Subject: Team3S: Turbo Replacement

I just talked to the shop looking at a particularly bad case of 'turbo-whine
turned turbo screech' that I have on my '92 Dodge Stealth Twin Turbo.  I
really thought it was only the rear turbo but they said the oil supply lines
to both turbos were nearly completely clogged up and both turbos are bad.
The car has 82k miles on it; I've only had it 6 months. It ran fine until
the thermostat stuck closed on it a couple of months ago, that's when the
whine started.

They are going to do some more inspection to see if they think an engine
flush might be necessary to get rid of any potentially turbo-destroying
carbon flakes. They said they drain and replace the oil and filter and add
some strong chemicals. They run the car for an hour then repeat the process
of draining and replacing the oil, filter and chemicals and run it another
hour. Finally they replace the oil and filter, run it and drain it and
replace oil and filter again.  They get $70 for this which seems like cheap
insurance but, always a but, he says sometimes when all that carbon breaks
loose you can end up with an engine that now burns oil (i.e. a smoker).

Has anyone else had any experience with this that can offer some advice
and/or warnings?

Thanks,

Jim

Replacing the oil feed/drain lines is a _very_ prudent thing to do when you
change turbos..much more when you toast one.

Its worth the extra money.

Hey gang:

We spent the morning installing a set of new Porsche Brembo Big Red
calipers (same as on a Porsche Turbo -- the biggest calipers made for a
street vehicle), Pagid pads, and a set of stainless steel brake lines
(front and rear) on my 94 VR4. I bought the kit from Brad Bedell, and it
goes on very easily. Every part needed is supplied, and everything fits
like a glove.

Now that I see how easy it was to install, I see that I coulda done it
myself over a weekend. But, as I always do, I took it down to my trusty
brake & suspension shop -- Denny's Muffler in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My guy
took three hours, but that was because he was being methodical and
meticulous. It looks like it could be a two-hour job, if you were in a big
hurry.

I don't want to make our German friends gag, but the entire labor cost for
this -- involving three hours labor to remove the old calipers and brake
lines, install the new Porsche calipers and pads up front, install the new
stainless steel lines on all four wheels, and bleed the entire system TWICE
(once to just get all the air out, and the second time to bleed in the
correct factory sequence) -- a project that in Germany probably would cost
US$750.00-$1,000 -- was -- are you ready?--

...Europeans are not going to believe this...

$126 (includes tax).

You folks on the coasts can eat your hearts out, too.
Not only that, it was done RIGHT.

BTW, if anyone in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri or Wisconsin needs brake,
suspension or alignment work done on a Stealth or VR4, you can't find a
better, more reasonable place than Denny's (319/363-5245 ask for Mike or
Shelby). They've practiced enough on mine. Besides, they seem to enjoy
working on the car. And they let you watch and kibitz.

I haven't bedded in the pads yet, so I haven't really gotten on the binders
with gusto. Therefore, I can't tell any difference yet. But I will. Bedding
them in requires three stops from 90 mph and three stops from 110. Hi,
officer.

Rich/old poop/94 VR4/I think maybe THESE will stop me.

Bedding requires several days of driving around normally, or even easy on the
brakes.  Outgassing requires the high speed stops AFTER they are bedded.
However, the BBQ method for outgassing the pads is highly recommended.  John
Christian reports a very noticible increase in pad life (on the race track) due
to the BBQ method.

Have fun!

Awesome, I wish I could afford that kit.  Anyways, what about size fitment
and rotors?  What rotors did you use, and how big are the calipers.  In
other words, we need to see what wheels will fit over them, so that others
considering a wheel upgrade may have more options if going with the Brembo
calipers now.  Do they stick out as far?

In its case size yes, but not in pad and piston size. You know that there
are calipers with six pistons. The less the mass on the struts the better !!

I think I remember people weighing them in at

Choice of wheel width will be important.  The only
person I know of who has these wheels on his car
is Matt Meyer of Accelerated Accessories.  He did
19 x 8.5's in front and 19 x 9.5's in rear.  However,
I think he might also have upgraded front calipers on
his car which would give him more clearance.  I sent
him an email asking which offset he used, but I didn't
get a response (as usual).

18" C5's are offered in 9" width so that should be
your best bet.  I'm pretty sure that all their wheel
widths are offered in a "high disk offset" which would
be designated by an "H" following the offset.  This is
what you would want to go with.  It would probably
be listed as 41H or 44H, and it is intended for big
caliper cars.  (Note: the increased clearance comes
from a lower lip width.)

I don't know the exact offsets that they offer.  Just
keep in mind that the lower offset is always the safer
bet, but if you go too low the rims will be sticking
out.  Here's the webpage for the wheels, and I'm sure
if you call the number they can give you more specifics.

Remember, Porterfield uses Brembo blanks, and Brembo rotors do warp (remember
the Stillen Big Brake stories?).  It is actually the cryogenic treatment (that
Porterfield uses if you request) that helps them resist warping.
