Subject: Team3S: Help, idling problem.. throttle position sensor??

Hi Team,

My car's been acting weird lately. Use to happen maybe
once a month.. now every other day!

The engine would have a hard time idling. No throttle
response.. and engine just chokes and dies. I just
gave it a lot of gas and keep driving.  It will drive
OK (cruising speed) but then stumbles.. then OK
again.. then stumble. But after a few minutes, it will
go away.. and of course its time to take it to a
mechanic.. this wouldnt happen!  Anyways.. it happen
again tonite and its annoying the sh*t outa me.

I will take it to the dealer next week to get some
maintainance done.. including a new fuel filter.

I remember I heard somewhere this might be a problem
associated with the 'throttle positioning sensor'?
Without knowing the real cause of this problem, I
might just go ahead and replace this thing during the
maintenance since the car is kinda old anyways.

My mods are: 13Gs, 550s, ARC-2GP, HKS pump.  The
problem started way later after these mods.. so I dont
think its my mods.

Can someone give me some advice?? Also, how much $$ to
replacing that sensor?

Thanx!

Subject: Re: Team3S: Help, idling problem.. throttle position sensor??

George,

DO NOT take your car to a dealer just to check the TPS! If your
TPS didn't work, your car wouldn't run at all. You can easily
check the functioning with the TMO datalogger or a digital volt
meter (DVM).

As Roger has pointed out, for idle the ARC2 must see less than
0.5V from the TPS (ECU pin 67 OBDI and pin 87 OBDII) and does
not tap into the idle position switch value. The TPS output can
vary a little depending on driving conditions. Your TPS is
probably adjusted where the value is less than 0.5V sometimes
and greater other times. Hence the intermittent nature of your
problems.

If you don't have a datalogger or don't want to tap into the ECU
just loosen the two bolts on the sensor, rotate it A LITTLE
counterclockwise, then tighten the bolts. See if your problems
go away. Repeat as necessary. WARNING: our cars want to see
between 0.3V and 1.0V at idle from the TPS so don't turn too
far.

If you have the datalogger just look at the DRB II signals
(percentages or voltages) with the car off or running. The
percentage is just the TPS value divided by the reference
voltage of 5V.

With a DVM, you must read the TPS values at the ECU (harder but
more rewarding). If you need more info let me know.

Hope this helps some,

Oleg, Rich is correct in that the car adjusts itself for quite a few
conditions when in "Tour" mode.  The following information can
be derived from the service manual.

Cheers,
Kevin Clark
'91 GTO-VR4

Title:   Electronic Control Suspension (ECS)
Source:  1991 3000GT Service Manual (pg 33B-18,19)

When in Sport mode selected the suspension is set at Hard.

When in Tour mode the following Control Functions are active:

  Anti-Roll
If the steering wheel is rotated 90 degrees within 0.3 seconds
then the suspension is set at Medium.  If this change occurs
within 0.2 seconds then it is set at Hard.

  Anti-Dive
If the speed of the vehicle drops quickly during braking then
the suspension is set at Hard.

  Anti-Squat
The suspension will harden at low speeds when accelerating
quickly.  During hard acceleration at 30km/h the suspension
is set at Hard, at 60km/h it is set at Medium, at 90km/h it
is set at Soft.  At all speeds suspension will change to
Medium after a second of acceleration.

  High Speed Sensitive
When accelerating the suspension will change from Soft to
Medium at 130km/h and will revert back to soft when the
    speed drops below 120km/h.

  Pitching and Bouncing
If the vehicle's body bounces up and down by approx 5cm within
a second then the suspension is set at Hard until this motion
    ceases.

O'k I undestand, but:
1. The car doesn't move.
2. When I switch from "Tour" to "Sport", front suspension is set at hard (22
to 17) and rear is set at soft (20 to 24)!!!! It's stupid!!!

Not sure what the numbers mean but this sounds like there is a problem
with the rear ECS.  Have a look at 33B in your Service Manual to trouble-
shoot the problem.  The following is from page 18...

6. ACTUATOR OPERATION CHECK

6-1. Actuator Operating Sound Check
(1) Set the ignition switch to ON.
(2) Bring your ear near the top of the shock absorber.
     NOTE
In the case of the rear shock absorbers, remove the trim
cover at the top of the shock absorber before bringing your
     ear near the shock absorber.
(3) Check that the operating sound of the actuator in the shock
absorber can be heard each time the control modes are
changed by pressing the ECS switch.

6-2. Damping Force Check
(1) Set the ignition switch to ON.
(ECS indicator Tour ON, damping force SOFT)
(2) Check the damping force SOFT state by shaking the top
mounting points of the front shock absorbers or the top of
the rear end panels of the rear shock absorbers up and
     down.
(3) Press the ECS switch to change the control mode to Sport.
(ECS indicator Sport ON, damping force HARD)
(4) Shake the vehicle up and down to check that the damping
force is harder than in the SOFT state.

On a '91 GTO-VR4...

The Throttle Position Sensor is near where the Y-pipe
meets the Intake Plenum (near the Idle Speed Adjustment
Screw on the engine - see http://beam.to/GTO_Manual).

In the Service Manual this can be found in Section 13
pages 33 to 35.

Cheers,
Kevin.

Hi all,

I'll be running Road Atlanta with the Peachtree BMWCCA this weekend 3/11
& 12.  They allow guests so if you come by, I'll talk with one of the
instructors to get you a fast ride in their car around the track.

They won't allow me to have passengers.

Let me know privately if you'll be there.

Be of good cheer
