Team3S: Honking problem! Help!
Hi Team,
I encountered a weird
problem today. Went to start my
car after out to lunch and the horn started
to honk
when i turned the key!! It just honks like i had my
hand over my
horn button..
its not the honking like the factory alarm, which
honks
with a on - off rythmn.. i tried pulling the
fuse in the engine compartment
but still no use.
I had no choice but to drive home honking!! it
was
pretty embarassing.. everyone must thought i was
crazy~ Then, at a
stop light.. i shut off my engine,
the turbo timer kicked in.. the honking
stopped.. but
to my suprise.. the steering wheel was working (I
remembered
it would lock). I drove home (2miles) with
the key shut off and turbo timer
running!
Then a minute later, I smelled a fume comming from
steering
column.. something was burning!!! I quickly
drove home and now the car is in
the garage.. i looked
under the steering column but didnt see
anything
suspicious... the horn still honks when the key is
turned (not
even to start). can someone help???
Thanx in
advance,
George

Take the key and lock and unlock the door
on the driver side. That will
turn the horn off.
What happened
is that while you were away from your car the alarm was
triggered. This
can be caused by a loud car or someone bumped your car.
Then when you unlock
your, the system is telling you that the alarm was
activated while you were
away.

George, I would start with your horn/theft alarm
relaylocated near the fuse
box inside the car. Also the horn relay which is
located under the hood
front passanger side near the headlight. They way the
system works is when
you press the horn button it completes a ground to the
coil of the relay.
This causes the relay contacts to close and complete a
circuit to the horn.
If you have a short to ground anywhere on that wire it
is the same as
pressing the horn switch in the car. The wiring from the
horn switch on
your steering wheel goes through what is called the clock
spring. This could
also be suspect. If you pull the horn relay you
should at least disable the
horn so you can drive it.

George,
I'd have to look at my
3000 to see if it's possible, but I used
to have the same thing happen to me
on my GTI.. When I would turn
the key to start the car, one of the
other keys on the ring would
occasionally twist into just the right position
to slide between
the steering wheel and the column, thus completing the horn
circuit.. It doesn't sound like a key is your problem, but
either
some foreign material found its' way in there, or the contact
for
the horn circuit somehow wedged itself permanently in the
closed (on)
position..
the burning smell is probably the casing on wires melting or
burning! make sure you thoroughly investigate the wiring on the
column to make sure there's no bare wire, so you won't have more
problems in the future!
hope that helps..

Sounds like maybe your neutral safety
switch has gone to lunch. I'd check
that. It screws into the
tranny and has several wires coming off it. It
makes sure that your
car cannot be started in gear. It is probably shorting.
It is in a
location that can get wet so it is susceptible to being more
problematic in
the rain.
Give it a try and let us know what you
find.

Team3S: Honking problem! Help!
Thanx guys for all your input!
The
1st thing I did was unlocking/locking the door to
try to disarm the factory
alarm.. but it didnt work.
I have an aftermarket alarm anyways with remote
door
locks.. and never used the factory one.. besides, the
honking is
unlike the factory alarm going off.. its a
constant honk!! Another note, the
honking is from just
one horn.. when i press the horn button on my
steering
wheel.. its a separate horn..
After taking off the big
plastic thing under the
steering column.. i didnt see any visual shorts...
I
had the car towed to a local auto electric specialist
for further
investigation. When the car arrived at
the shop, the tech imediately
told me he smelled
burned wires.. but after an hour of investigating,
he
couldnt find any sign of short wires!! He cut the 2
horn wires
and started the car in the garage, we tried
to duplicate the fume but no
luck..
The car is still at the shop.. he will continue to
work on it
tommorow..
Now the question I have for you guys.. does driving
the
car with the turbo timer running and the key to
'off' could cause anything to
be shorted?? does that
ruin anything??? I did that driving home from
lunch
today so I dont piss off any roadragers with my
annoying horn!
The tech guy is suggesting the fume and horn could be
two separate
problems.. he thinks someone tried to
"slim jim" my door which
caused the horn problem.. and
the fume might be from driving with the turbo
timer..
Any more suggestions??

Oskar,
The alarm turns off in about
a minute but until you lock and unlock the door
with the key the horn will be
triggered everytime any power is drown from the
battery.
Before I
bought the VR4, I was driving my Dad's Mitsubishi and the same thing
happened
to me. I called my dad and he told me to lock and unlock the
driver
side door with the key.
One of my neighbors has a loud truck
and he use to set my alarm of any morning
I would leave the car in the
driveway. He has moved away now and this doesn't
happen that
often.
As far as the smell, I don't know what that would be. If
George does not
smell it any more then I would say that it had something to
do with the horn
relay. But that is just a guess on my
part.

George, to keep the car going with my turbo timer, I have to
keep the
emergence brake on. As soon as I take the brake off the car
turns off. This
is for safty.
Oskar is the one that helped me with the
wiring. I can not run my car

I got rid of the
stock battery and bought the Black Panther Predator battery (about $150).
I believe they've changed the name of it, but anyways it is a dry cell battery
which is about 14 pounds lighter than the stock one and a lot smaller. It
gave me enough room to mount the water tank sitting upright (long edge down) on
the battery tray, with the pump hanging down to the rear and the activation
switch on the front upper side facing the air filter. I used the hole on
the long side for the water feed by drilling a hole in the battery tray for the
line to run through. If you mount it there, then you only have about
12" of hose for the water to travel through, as well as the water output
hole from the tank being the lowest and farthest back so that when you hit the
gas the water sloshes towards the hole instead of away from it. You are
also super-close to the battery to keep the wiring short as well.
If you
are interested in doing it this way, go to
http://www.jegs.com and look under the
Ignition/Batteries section for the Odyssey Racing Batteries and the smaller
(PC925) battery is perfect for this application. You'll actually need to
shim it to make the battery bracket hold it down because it is so small. I
used a piece of 2x4 under the hold-down to make it stay put.
I couldn't
find any* way to shorten the length of hose or wiring more than doing it this
way. I get what feels like instant water injection and the car pulls well
the whole time it is on. I'm using the medium-sized jet. Every tank
of gas uses about 2/3 a tank of distilled water, your mileage may vary.

Add my '92 RT/TT to the list of those that make this

If this is the case, you need to adjust (lengthen) the

I have driven about 5 different
R/T turbos. (from 91 to 95) *Every single
one* I have driven has done
*exactly* what you just mentioned Ken. When
shifting from neutral
into 1st you can hear/feel a "thud" noise. (for lack
of a
better description). I always wondered what that
was!
Thanks,
Rick

this definitely sounds like the alarm horn (a seperate horn from
the regular
ones in front of the radiator), especially if the front ones
sound when you
push the horn button. i'd also lift the hood and see which
horn is going
off. the ones in front of the radiator, or another one
somewhere else inside
the engine bay (i'm sorry, i forget exactly where it
is, but i've come
across it before poking around in there. it's somewhere on
the drivers side
next to the engine.)
it could be a stuck relay. i'd
check the alarm horn relay to make sure. this
happened when i installed my
air horns. the wiring diagram showed two of the
connections backwards, and
the relay stuck open while i was driving home.
stock horn is one thing, air
horn is another. i was afraid of people calling
the police since it was 11 at
night, so i pulled over and cut off the 12v
going to the horns. after
installing another relay correctly, the problem
went away
completely.
