Subject: Team3S: Recommend Porterfield Vendor?

***This is the NEW Team3S list. See message end for more info.***

The Stillen Metal Matrix pads were only so-so and the Abex pads didn't last
worth a damn, so next I think I'll try Porterfield RS4s.  Can anyone recommend a
good vendor on the net?  Doesn't have to be the cheapest, just an outfit that
can take a secure credit card order and put them in the mail promptly.  I don't
ask a lot, but this seems to be more than many places can handle!  :-(  Any
suggestions would be most appreciated.  Thank you!

How about http://www.porterfieldbrakes.com.  (I just checked and their page is
unavailable now, but it worked a few weeks ago).

Whatever pads you get, be sure to do the BBQ treatment on them.  That seems to
be the best way (i.e. gradual) to 'outgas' new pads.  A couple of the list road
racers highly recommends this.

I should have mentioned that I've checked Porterfield's web site and they do not
seem to offer an on-line ordering facility.  Phone calls to California from
Germany are a bit on the high side... are there any Porterfield vendors with
secure on-line ordering?

Thanks to all for the testimonials... I look forward to giving the RS4s a try.

-Jim

P.S.- The Abex pads are down to the wear indicators after less than 5000 miles!
Not acceptable.  Performance was pretty binary... slippery when cold, very
grabby when hot.  They get loud and temporarily warp the stock rotors when
braking from high speeds on the Autobahn.  No detectable scoring, though.
Overall not impressed.

***This is the NEW Team3S list. See message end for more info.***

I just read a post by Forrest where he mentioned a "5 stage power steering
assist". Wow! I didn't know the car had this! (do they all have this? - mine
is 1st gen VR4)

Does anybody know how this works? I'm guessing its some kind of power
steering fluid bypass valve that is progressively opened to deliver less and
less steering assist. Is there any way to modify this electronically or
mechanically?

Thanks

Try these guys: http://www.racesearch.com/, they sell on line.  This is the
company I purchased my pads Porterfield R4S pads through.  I think now they
are referring to them as R4E's, not R4S's.  If I remember correctly they
were the AP531 (fronts)  and AP532 (rears) set.

Hope this helps,

Dave Best

I'll second this.  I can now do the plugs on my VR4 by myself in 30 minutes
or so now too.  I can't remember how long it took the first time but it was
far from anything to crow about ;)

One thing I can't seem to do is finish getting my car back on the
road...another issue altogether.

Im getting this whining/squeaking noise over 4000 rpm.  Sounds
something like wet rubber squeaking against a wooden floor, if thats any
help.  I know Ive heard it before, so it must be something clear and common -
i just cant place it.  Just had the clutch replaces 3500 miles ago.  Oil
change with Mobil1 about 200 miles ago, and added Techron with the oil
change.  Any suggestions appreciated.

I have one as well (like a small mouse in the engine compartment)... It
appears to be an idler pulley bearing, I can spray some lube on the pulley
and it quits for a few hours. You might get a piece of hose and use that
like a stethoscope to find out where the noise originates...

Alright, I'm braving it and designing my own intake for the NA S/3
automatics, but I need some help from the engineers of the group.
I remember you guys saying that s smooth intake path is the most desired
design, plus there should be no, or as few 90 degree bends as possible. Is
there anything else? Is there an optimal "bend angle"? I'm going to hang the
K&N lower in the engine bar, where the air coming in the front will blow
right onto it. If it's a success, i'll be happy to publish the results and a
how-to for the Team 3/S NA page.

Matt
