Hello, got an interesting "Germlin" (ab additional one) in my 92 RT/TT.

Last Sunday, I installed 100 W bulbs in my Fog lights (see previous post),
and installed a K&N air filter (the OEM replacement.....NOT the FIPK).

After the install....everyting was fine....

Yesterday, the car felt slow.....sure, I only got 0.45-0.50 bar, instead of
my usual 0.70-0.90 bar (depending on the DBSC setup).

The measurement of the boost was NOT a problem, as the same pressure was
recorded by the DBCS and the Blitz Dual Turbo Timer.

I thought that the problem MIGHT be related to the install of the fol
lights, creating an electrical problem....after all, how could I mess up
installing an air filter...

After a quick check (ahem, about 1 hour) is was obvious that the problem was
NOT related to the fog light.

So....went to the next possibility....

I re-opened the air box, and checked everyting....all was clamped correctly,
and the box was closed...(looked at it with a dentist's mirrot)..I cleaned
the MAS connector (it wasn't dirty anyway), and went for a test
drive....leaving the K&N filter in there.

Boost was back as normal (full).....for....something like 5 minutes....THEN,
I got back the 0.45 level.....DOH.

Came back home, re checked the Air box...everything was fine....removed the
K&N filter, put back the stock air filter.....went for a ride....got full
boost...

Puzzling, isn't it ????

Came back....looked at the stock & K&N filters...were PERFECTS...looked at
the MAF, was PERFECT too.

Put the K&N back in it....Full boost, THEN low boost....

Interesting...heh.......I H(-;A(-;T(-;E(-; this car...

Came back....re-looked at everything.....

Finally, in despair, I simply rotated the K&N air filter.....It was
installed with the UP side....up....but the label was towards the windshield
(I have an US import, LHD car), I rotated it conterclockwise, one quarter
turn....so the "this side up" label is now facing the right fender...closed
everything...went for a test drive....got full boost, again, and again, and
again.....

So, here's my question.....WHY ????!!!!!

The air filter looks SQUARE...but may be it's not completely.....but....even
if installed 1/4 turn wrong.....HOW the H*** would this explain the low
boost.....

Henri.

PS : Did I told you how nice, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly Roger Gerl
is....no...well...I just said it (-:

All I have to say about ABS, is that my 94 Transam had a much better,
quieter, and more transparent ABS system then my 95 VR4.  I noticed right
away how sensitive our system is.  The T/A was much more tractable and it
only came on under emergency situations and very hard braking and only for
the last few seconds.

All,

I'm not a mechanic (wish I were), and I need some advice. I was told to
diagnose my turbo PSI problem (4-5max) with a compression check. I will do
so eventually, but I was thinking. If I had a compression problem, then that
would mean oil will get past the rings, and since I only loose 1/2 qt every
3-4000 miles, dosent that mean my compression is OK?? It also NEVER blows
smoke of any kind when I step on it.

Not the post, but there's a thing in the front of the opening that has a
spring behind it, you know what I mean?

I think you are talking about the wind deflector.

To lower the wind deflector I use a 3" nail.  I depress the wind deflector
and then insert the nail into one of the guide slots for the sunroof.  When
I let up on the deflector it catches on the nail and the end result is that
the wind deflector is tilted down about halfway between fully extended and
fully depressed.

All,

I am in the process of moving our archive files (zip files of the
digests, saved by month) from the old server to our new one.  The
process was interrupted by a glitch, but we hope to have it
corrected shortly.  Only the latest four zip files were moved (Sept,
Oct, Nov, Dec, totalling 1.2 MB) and they ARE available at the
following URLs:

Sorry for the inconvenience.  Give me a day or two for the others...

Regards,

Forrest

Once the sunroof is off, why don't you just roll down the post that sticks
up.  I do that and it looks fine.

I don't suppose you remembered to disconnect your battery fo 20 minutes or
so after installing the K&N, did you?  Just checking because you didn't
mention it.  You need to do this anytime you make substantial changes to the
intake (and probably exhaust and fuel systems, too) so that the ECU can
start over with the default A/F curves and "learn" what to expect in the
future...
