I'm not sure but I guess you are not having a G-Force ECU, do you ? If you
don't have one than the timing is stock. Although I'd advance it by 2
degrees as this made a huge difference with the G-Force programmed like
that. The car passed the rpms much quicker and I blew off the y-pipe in
zero-time :(

Hmm, this is not normal. I know that the VPC is not the best thing for idle
and it often shots a little too much fuel in it and the rpm starts to
fluctuate. I'd say +/- 1 degree could be accepted but not 4.

Unfortunately, I haven't installed the VPC yet on our car and I wonder if
the ECU sets a code if the barometric and intake sensors are disconnected.
The VPC has its own temperature sensor in the intake plenum and I belive
that the VPC just simulates a constant voltage.

Are you saying to advance the timing 2 degrees with the stock ECU or the
G-Force or either?  Is this base or actual timing? I am stock except
FIPK and DSBC.

Thanks,

I do have a G-Force ECU but not sure which chip is in it.  So should I set the
"base" timing to 7 deg BTDC?

The service manual itself states that fluctuations of +/- 7 degrees is common.  I
was just curious why base timing was so steady and actual fluctuated so much.

Subject: Team3S: Wheels and tires

I FINALLY found a set of wheels to mount up the Yoko 032Rs (thanks to
Dennis Bretton, who sent me to Brian at Arrow Tire and Wheel in Upland, CA)
They sold me a set of 6-spoke wheels for $100 each plus shipping. I told
them they were for racing purposes, so they won't be pretty. They are the
rejected wheels that you guys send them in exchange for newly rechromed
wheels.

Now I need to buy a set of street tires.

Arrow Tire suggests a set of Daytons for $500 per set. Hmmm. Never heard of
them before. Well, I've heard of Daytons, fer sure, but not as a tire
suitable for our cars. Whaddayez think?

I don't need tires to race on, so I'd like the street tires to be
long-lasting, quiet, good in the rain, and suitable for 100 mph cruising.
Any suggestions?

Hey, Rich,

I've said it before...  I really like these Nittos that I'm using...
(Extreme Performance 450, V-rated directionals, around $100/tire). I bought
them for tooling around, but they've become my 'regular' tire, since they
handle corners perfectly neutrally, they're quiet even at 120, and they have
a 300 wear rating.  They're not SUPPOSED to be that good in the rain, since
they're over 9" wide, but like you, I keep my tires inflated quite high
(43/37), and the control I have at this setting, wet or dry, is great.  I
regularly take corners like I'm auto-X-ing, and after 15,000 miles, (and
overinflated), they're just now starting to show some wear.  I'll definitely
buy them again.

They don't list them anymore on the TireRack site, but their specs are
definitely above and beyond...  Highly recommended, if they're still
available; if not, I've read similar good things about the Nitto 550 (555?).
BTW, Frank at Accelerated Accessories also recommended the 450's several
months ago (while responding to a request on the list) as being as good (but
much cheaper) than the similar Michelin Pilot XGTV4...  Check 'em out.

Best,

Forrest

But what were the specs for the G-Force ECU or did you just got a modified ECU.
Either way, I'd then leave the timing stock as the G-Force program should take
care of advancing.

I just rechecked and you are right although my european manual says that a
fluctuation of +/- 5 degrees is common :/ Either way, I don't think that this
points to a problem.

Gang,

Mike is offering this specials only till the end of this month. IMHO, $409
is an incredible, damn good price for the new S-AVC-R and I will get it for
my customer (at least one). If I'd want to import it directly for the
wholesale price from Japan I'd pay much more ;-)

With these specials you don't have to sign to any GP and no one has to
organize it (uff) Just call Mike and place your order :)

BTW, the Accel wires are discussable.

I'm currently discussing some other GPs on performance upgrades for our cars
with Mike, like y-pipe and a complete "fuel upgrade kit" (Power Stage 2).
I'll inform you as soon as we have facts.

I hope this saves some bucks on good deals :))

From: "R.G." <robby@freesurf.ch>
Subject: Team3S: Precat replacings (salvage yard parts)

I called/emailed some of the salvage yards asking about a rear pre-cat that
I can hollow out. As I wanted to be able to replace the thing easily if I
can't pass emissions I needed the whole part as a future replacement.

I was not able to find any totalled 3000GT/Stealth allover Europe and no
parts are available. I could get a new one for $400 but I think this too
expensive for such a backup-replacement !!!

I finally found MS-Recycling and asked for a quote on
http://www.msrecycling.com/index.html. They replied within a few days and
quoted me $100 for the thing. Not bad I thought and called them some days
later as I was told to order it by phone. The person then told me that the
price is around $270 and I told him I got a quote by email and I do not want
to pay any dime more ! Even more I told him about our list, the email I got
from them and another blahblah. He went off the phone for a few seconds and
agreed to send it to Switzerland for $114 including shipping.... I was
happy.

I got it about 8 days later and guess what, it came with an O2 sensor
installed :) Also it is not a california car (or just an early year) as only
one O2 sensor is installable. Also the whole thing looks even better than
the existing rear pre-cat (a lot less carbon build up).

Ok, I studied the thing a loong time and though about a replacement pipe as
Barry has let made for his car. But I finally came to the conclusion, that
it is cheaper and easier just to hollow out the thing. The local header
experts checked the flange to the turbo and just told me that fabricating
this stuff will become too expensive ($150 and more for the flange only).
Therefore, the idea arose tol cut the replacement thing infront the pre-cat
just after the O2 sensor housing and the flange after the cat. In between a
larger pipe will be welded in that matches the ATR dp. Also the flange will
be machined to match the ATR piping. But after looking into the pre-cat the
diameter is not really a problem and only the flange should be enlarged. We
have't check the beginning diameter of the cat so this is an unknown
variable that could cause a small interference.

This is a work we can do by ourselfs (I love distroying stuff, engine and
so, you know ...) and for porting the flange just some grinding stones for
the electric drill are needed.

At the same time, the header shop is gonna create a front pre-cat
replacement for me. I've choosen this because the new pipe will just be
welded to the ATR DP. The "flange" from the dp can be used for the
connection to the front O2 sensor housing. This will cost me around $120
(hey these are swiss prices :((() as well as some porting on the O2 sensor
housing outlet will then be done by me.

Therefore, for about $220 I do have fully pre-cat replacements including an
easy way to go back to stock at any time (at least every second year for
emmision tests). I think this is not too bad although just hollowing out the
stock pre-cats is free. But not passing the emmision test would cause to
lose the license plate within a month here and therefore this is a $220
lifetime insurance :)

BTW, does anyone have made internal pictures, before and after gutting the
precats ? The flanges, as well as the start / end diameter of the catalytic
material are of interest.

Roger
