Symptoms are shifter won't stay in 5th gear and/or excessive freeplay on
shift linkage in 5th gear.  Car may "jerk" or make grinding noises in 5th
gear.  Take off wheel, plastic shields, end case of tranny and you can see
the nut closest to the passenger compartment.  If nut is loose, take it off
and replace with a brand-new nut from Mitsu or Dodge (Mitsu is more likely
to have one on-hand) and torque it to something like 120 ft/lbs (check shop
manual) and stake it down to the shaft by bending the inner edge of the nut
into the slots on the gearshaft.

Subject: Team3S: End nut on NT 3/S car trannies

The transmissions are the same as the DSM trannies, and I have PERSONALLY
seen two end-nuts back off and crack the end cover on the transmission. The
end cover is the part that is towards the passenger side wheel.

One person had even lost the nut completely, and had a 3" hole in the tranny
(freshly rebuilt), but did so little driving in 5th (city mostly) that he
didn't notice it until he tried to go into that gear. You should have seen
the synchros and gear... all mashed up and probably in the tranny oil,
eating other parts up.

The other one was almost the same story, but this one was due to the
rebuilder REUSING that end nut. It is an NON-REUSABLE part, and is 34mm I
believe. You MUST use a new one each time you hammer the detents in. Don't
think that loc-tite will hold it in place (tranny fluid will likely
deteriorate it).

Like Matt J. said, it's an easy fix (and cheap too). You just have to remove
the wheel, the splash sheild and remove all the long bolts that hold the end
plate onto the center housing. There are probably 10 long bolts, and then
you can usually hammer it off (with a RUBBER mallet, remember, this is
ALUMINIUM). If you can't hammer it off, try sticking a small screwdriver
(flat) on the outside of one of the bolt bumps. Don't gouge it much, the RTV
sealer will take care of small nicks and scratches.

Also, don't go shifting the gears manually while removing this nut... we
did, and the 5th gear synchro assy. flew apart, with the tabs landing all
over the place :). One more thing. There is a black plastic "straw" that
supplies oil to the gears at this part of the transmission. It is near the
top, and you may not notice it. It WILL break easily (guess how we found
that out? :).

Putting the trannie in gear and mashing the brake (have someone else do it)
will give more than enough friction to torque that nut back on. I'm not
sure, but I think it's about 80ft/lbs of torque. Hammer in the detents with
a small drift, (or flat screwdriver) and a mini sledge. Get both sides to
detent.

It's really not that hard, and it WILL save you a lot of headaches later,
when you find out the end cover is 300+$. One more thing, there is a "wave"
spring on the end cover, and it may fall out. Remember to put it all back
together as it came apart. Good luck!

Subject: Team3S: Lash Adjuster Help

Members,

I am about to try to take on the endeavor of trying to replace my
Lash Adjusters.  I was wondering if anybody has ever done it.  How hard was
it?  Do I need any special tools?  I checked out John Adam's site, but
doesn't show procedure(not knocking it John, I love your site).  Thanx in
advance.

Subject: Team3S: Turbo Connection

While perusing the St. Louis Yellow pages for an air conditioning unit
for my Jeep, I came across and ad for a Place called "Turbo Connection"
in Edwardsville, Illinois(just across the Miss. River from St. Louis).

The ad says...and I quote:

"Mustang, LT1-Camaro/TRANSAM/Impala SS/MITSUBISHI 3000, Eclipse, and
Talon Performance Specialists"

Has anybody had any dealing or have any knowlege of these people?
Perhaps I'll take a ride and see them.  Could be another 3/S-shop
relationship to develop.
