With 167mph, this is definitely a proof
that the car is in good shape :)

All engines are from Japan and there is no way that a computer can
tell that the
engine has been worked on. It is possible that the ECU has been
altered and the
checksum is different as well as the readouts are different
fro mthe sensors but
that's it.

smile on his lips, I was informed that the

Nice story :)) If he isn't sure about the
details, how did he installed the
engine ? Also it's easy to tell the engine
is 460hp rated ... where is the
engine dyno sheet ? If the car has a Jack
Knife tranny I wonder why it isn't a
six speed. For the timing belt, I don't
know what a metal-linked belt should
help and what it is for (on our
cars).

this engine? I'm

Well, I'd go and
search for the bleeder valve mod. Also hook up a good
aftermarket gauge and
check the real boost the car is running on. I made 174mph
with 15 psi of
boost and power is around 400 SAE hp for the engine... measured
on the dyno.
You'll get 460 SAE hp with about 17.5 psi of boost but only if the
fuel
system has been adapted. Therefore, I'd pull an injector and check its
size.
If its a 550 or bigger then it is a modified system. If it's a stock
360cc
inj. then it was a nice fary tale ;-)
BTW, Mitsu Racing is not
existing, it is called "Rally Art". They modified a few
3000GT for Rally
purposes and gave them larger intercoolers, bigger turbos and a
different
fuel system. Also the exhaust has been replaced by a lighter
one.

Roger

What is this about a Jack Knife transmission? I've never heard
of such a
thing. Is this a rebuild shop? Do the trannys last longer/better
parts?
I'd like to know 'cause 3rd gear is getting a little bit notchy on
my "new"
getrag that is less than two years old.

Well, not necessarily a fairy tale... Just to clarify Roger's
post, it
is probably possible to make 460 SAE hp without fuel mods, but
this
would surely result in detonation and serious engine damage. It is
good
advice to have things checked out in case it is a
dangerous
configuration.

A couple of things caught my attention
in this recent post:
1) What's a jack knife transmission?
2) This
particular timing belt is something I 've not heard of before. Could
instalation
extend 60k changes significantly-- if we could import them --if
they are available, or
if they even exist?
Who's in the
know?

put 2nd gen. rotors and calipers on 1st gen. car?
The rotors on my '91
vr4 are badly warped from just daily driving. I've heard
the 2nd gen cars
have much improved brakes, but I recall someone saying that
the components
will not fit inside the stock 17" wheel on my car. Anybody
know if this is
true or not?
If I need to get new wheels, what years do I look for -
seems to me the brake
upgrade happened for '93. Is this
right?
Besides the wheel clearance issue, would the components simply
bolt into
place or would I have to do some mods to get them to
fit?
Thanks,

I think what Roger was trying to say is that things just
don't make sense here. I got
that impression off the bat also.
This person bought and installed a 1 of 14 engine?
He doesn't know the
details? The person buying the car didn't pay an inflated price
and
this info wasn't disclosed ahead of time? I wonder what an engine
straight from 'Mitsu
Racing' would cost... These and the things Roger
pointed out make it sound like a fairy
tale.

Yes, everything will

1994 was the year
the bigger brakes showed up. Noticeable difference in
braking
performance over previous years, no question.

My latest acquisition
To all and
sundry,
I recently purchased a 1991 3000GT VR-4 with 23K
miles. The car looks brand
new (it is the pearl white paint with dark
grey and red interior) and has
the original 3000GT floor mats. But that
isn't the reason for this post.
While driving from
Pittsburgh, PA to Huntsville, AL I had occasion to open
it up on
Interstate 71 between Columbus and Cinncinati at around 4 a.m. A
State
Trooper coming the other way turned on his lights and came after me.
He
told me that he had me at 167 mph!!!! Now, I know that no stock
VR-4
will go that fast and since that was only the fourth day I had
driven the
car I felt that the Trooper was mistaken (he showed me his
radar readout -
167). As I'm an ex-cop I got away with a warning and a
smile.
Upon returning to Pittsburg I took the car to the
dealer to find out why
this particular car produced speeds that high
(the pedal wasn't on the
floor). They put the car on the computer and
told me that the engine had
been worked on and they thought it was
probably an engine from Japan,
rather than a stock mill from the U.S.
As I bought the car from a private
party, I went back to him and asked
the obvious question "What had been
done to the engine?". With a wry
smile on his lips, I was informed that the
engine is one of 14 that
were specially built by Mitsu Racing for test
purposes in 1994. He had
been in Japan in 1995 and had picked up the engine
(wouldn't say how)
and installed it in the VR-4.
To make a long story short, he
informed me that the engine is rated at
460HP and has a metal-link
timing belt and several other goodies that he
isn't sure of (at least
the technical details) including a Jack Knife
5-speed transmission, and
beefed up drive train.
So my question is this - do any of you
know anything about this engine? I'm
already familiar with Mr. Knife's
transmissions and drive train mods, but
the engine has me
stumped.
Thanx for the help (if any is
forthcoming).
John
