Yes, it is the RamAir. I recently asked
him about the foglight removal,
and that only applies to pre-94
vehicles. I guess 94+ went to smaller
foglights which don't block the
opening as badly. He said that an option
for pre-94 owners is to
upgrade the fogs at the same time you install his
kit, installing something
smaller. He recommended a PIAA model, but I
don't have the model number
at my fingertips.
The guy has been running it on his vehicle for about a
year, and no
adverse development. I'm not sure what his plans are for
marketing the
kit.
The URL is still down, I'll let you know when it's
up.

1st off I'd like to say I love this list and I'm
saddened by Chris
Dotur's decision to sell his car. I met Chris &
car during the 97 Nopi
Nationals. Cool guy, cool car, cool color
too.
Yesterday, the first time in the hi-teens for GA, I noticed very
hard
shifting (sand box comes to mind). Is this purely
weather-related? or
is it time to change my tranny
fluid? As the car is driven for a
little while, the
notchiness seems to go away. I presently have BG
synchro in
there. Been almost 2 years since I last filled
it.

nxiong (sorry, don't know your
name)...
It wouldn't hurt to check the level, but my bet is on the
ambient air
temperature. My shifter gets considerably stiffer when it's down
in the 20s
(F), and that "notchy" feeling (which is the thing I like least
about the
VR4) get worse. Mine feels "normal" when the air temps are above 60
and/or
having been driven for at least 15 minutes.
Ah well, the price
we pay for having an INCREDIBLE car. :-)
Looking
forward...Chris

Team3S: Resonator Affecting Gas Mileage?
Just a question for anyone out
there who has a NA car and watches their gas
mileage...
I removed my
intake resonator (at the same time I replaced my fuel filter),
and since
then, I've been getting 1-1.5 mpg less, on average (about
2000mi
worth). I haven't found the fuel lines to/from the fuel filter
to be
leaking, and I know the ECU was reset because it idled at 2500RPM for
about
30 sec when I reinstalled the fuel filter, battery, etc. I
would think
that the resonator removal would have either a neutral or
positive effect on
fuel economy (reducing intake turbulence). And I
know the new fuel filter
should be neutral/positive with respect to fuel
economy.
Here's what I get now:
22-23mpg some highway, some
city, driving like an idiot sometimes (love
them
stoplights:)
23-25mpg some highway, some city, driving
normally/nicer/higher gears
27-29mpg long trips(full load of crap + 2
people) w/ cruise control (this
summer)
I haven't gone on any
long trips recently, but the 1st two ranges above were
1-1.5mpg higher about
4 months ago(before the resonator removal and fuel
filter replacement).
I haven't done anything else to the car recently other
than that.
Comments, ideas anyone?

Hi Guys;
I still seem to be experiencing the same
problem...a near subtle rear
end shudder at WOT....that is it's not
imagination and can be felt.
This may or may not be normal, so I thought I'd
check again with you all
and see if any of you have any vibration like this
kick in when you open
it up. I nearly posted off group to a few of you, but
thought answers in
the archives might be worth having.
Can this
may be turbo related: the rear end responds to the same
as
it grabs/spins and gives a shudder as wheel grab or spin occurs?
Anying
like this at all occur on your cars??
It is a steady
acceleration until shudder which is a second, not likely
two, in duration,
with acceleration occurring through it and after. .
My miles are low and have
not been hard miles since I bought it, but who
knows, the first owner may
have had his foot into it. If normal, I can
live with it, but if not, it is
really gnawing at my butt. Comparisons,
checks, or ideas
appreciated.

Well,
as requested below, here is what I ended up doing. The price info
for
all the suggestions below was added by me.
Since Dodge thoroughly
irritated me by not paying for any part of
replacing a tranny wth 20,000
miles on it (1 year old), I basically told
them to kiss my !@#$. I told
the Chrysler rep that I would do
everything in my power to see that Dodge
would get NO money for this
repair.
Next, I began to explore
the options listed below. The only one I
considered was having the
tranny rebuilt by Southern Gear. However, no
Dodge or Mitsubishi dealer
would put it in because it wasn't one of
their parts. I talked to a few
people who said putting it in was beyond
my mechanical expertise, so my only
real option was to go through a
dealer.
To keep up my end of the
bargain (that Dodge would see no money for this
tranny repair), I then called
around and had my 92 Stealth RT/TT towed
to a Mitsubishi Dealer.
What
the Dodge dealer recommeded changing is listed below. The
Mitsubishi
dealer suggested doing the same, but said the Slave Cylinder
Assembly did not
need replaced. The Dodge Dealer quoted me around $5600
and the Mitsu
Dealer quoted me around $5500. Naturally, it gets
more
interesting. On Monday the Mitsu dealer calls me and says that I
also
need a new Transfer Case Assembly. I then proceed to tell them
that I
already knew that and that was included in the original quote.
They
tell me that it was not included. They then wanted me to pay for
it
anyways (they wanted another $1200). I argued that I told them I
needed
it, and much to my surprise, they discounted all of the parts
enough
that the total repair was very close to the original price they
quoted
me.
>From this point forward, that Mitsubishi dealer will
get to do all the
work on my Stealth from here on out. Incedently, they
did screw up my
Viper car alarm. Fortunately, it turned out to be a
burnt fuse which
was easily
fixed.

Dunno. Consider emptying your xfer case, check the magnet on
the
drainplug for UGLY LARGE PIECES of gear; change to Redline
Shockproof
Heavy gear oil (if haven't already). My car had a juddery
feel
sometimes, especially notable at low speed, when xfer case ran out
of
fluid and gears inside were selfdestructing. Yours doesn't really
sound
like that...would have been toast long ago if was, I believe. I
have
never had the output shaft splines totally shear off the
transaxle
output-to-transfer case, but if it was trying to apply torque to
rearend
I suppose it could slip and judder like that. Dunno.
Otherwise, ignore
away!

Thanx Jack;
Will follow your shudder
advise. And, thanks as well for hounding Mitsu/Getrag for us
all. With any
sense they will acquiesce to your tenacity and start to avail parts as
they
should have from the outset. Mitsu has balls the size of B.B's if they really
did
allow Getrag to dictate the rules for a Mitsu car. Didn't someone post
recently that
Chrysler was supposed to be making these transmission parts now
available?? Seems I read
something on it somewhere (thought it was
here) and I thought the big merger had served
a useful purpose after
all.
Thanks again...will investigate.

As far as I know, Getrag doesn't even produce
trannys for our cars anymore.
The 1999 model year was the last that they did
and then production was
halted. Their facility in NC is now being
readied for production for some
other vehicles. They are very
interested in getting out of the
Mitsu/Chrysler "440" transaxle

Team3S: shudder/Getrag
The last talk I had with a Mitsu rep here in
Switzerland I spoke with him about
the synchro problems and asked him if it
is still necessary to change the whole
tranny due to the fact that Getrag
doesn't sell parts for it. He then told me
that this is not the case anymore
and the Mitsu dealers in Switzerland and
Germany are able to get any tranny
part for our cars !
With about 45'000km on the meter I felt that the car
became more a FWD than AWD
as the front tires slipped when accelerating
heavily. The cause was the worn
spline and Getrag sent immediately a new
tranny because it was impossible to get
all the small metallic particles out
of the box. Mitsu then sent the tranny back
to Getrag. My only cost was the
tranny oil !
Today, Getrag doesn't send the trannies around anymore if
there is a chance that
it is repairable. They just had a problem with a '96
3000GT imported from the
States (yellow one) and also had to change the
spline and synchros. A
specialized tranny shop in the area did the job for
the Mitsu dealer with parts
coming from Getrag.
The rep from Mitsu
didn't knew anything about Getrag ending with its production
but he told me
that they developed a new, lighter but stronger 6-speed tranny on
specs of
Mitsu. They could be for the 2.5l TwinTurbo AWD
Legnum.

To all

Cupertino for most of the month (in anticipation of possibly
moving here!),
so Eric, Satya and I are trying to put together a
short-notice Bay Area
Northwest Gathering (B.A.N.G. '99). Depending on how
many of you are
available, we're only planning a one day gathering for
Saturday, January
16th, but we may do something on Sunday, as well.
All plans are
tentative, but here's what we have so far-- We'll get
together on
Saturday for a drive to the Marin Headlands and/or Route 1 North
of the
Golden Gate Bridge; we'll take group photos and individual "car
portraits"
and I'll possibly shoot a bit of Digital Video of the group, as
well.
Depending on weather, we'll probably stop at one of the area beaches
or
National Parks for a picnic lunch and checking out the cars, etc...
In
the afternoon, we'll drive back into the city and assemble at my
photo
studio (I have a whole building, lots of room, killer 2700 watt stereo,
bar,
pool table...) for a gathering/party; we can either call out for pizza
and
beer (or chinese food, etc...) or go to one of the local places that ET
(my
SO, Eileen Thomas) and I know well (we can get a group rate for a buffet,
or
whatever...). If there are enough of us (and we are all free the
next day),
I may try to get us passes for Sears Point (1 hour north) for
Sunday, but
it's pretty short notice, and I haven't even checked it out
yet...
I've listed ALL the info I have for all of you below my sig;
PLEASE take a
minute to look it over (whether you can make it or not) to
verify your
information. Check out the names of any friends on the
list, too, and email
me privately with info on people that should be on the

I look forward to meeting those of you who I
have not met, and finally
putting "the face to the name" of those of you who
are already internet
friends. Time is of the essence here, so please
send in your feedback
ASAP!!! (Private email to BANG99@bobforrest.com ).

shudder
<snip>
I still seem to be experiencing the same
problem...a near subtle rear
end shudder at WOT....that is it's not
imagination and can be felt.
<snip>
Can this may
be turbo related: the rear end responds to the same as
it
grabs/spins and gives a shudder as wheel grab or spin occurs?
Anying
like this at all occur on your cars??
It is a steady
acceleration until shudder which is a second, not likely
two, in duration,
with acceleration occurring through it and after. .
My miles are low and have
not been hard miles since I bought it, but who
knows, the first owner may
have had his foot into it. If normal, I can
live with it, but if not, it is
really gnawing at my butt. Comparisons,
checks, or ideas
appreciated.

==================================
Darcy...
I'm not
sure how my VR4 was driven for the first 27K miles of it's life, but
I've
been driving it hard for the last 8K miles. WOT is a normal practice
every
time I drive Beastie, and redline is a frequent occurrence. I rarely,
if
ever, shift below 4500rpm, and rarely get out of third gear. I
haven't
noticed a shudder like you're describing. The only thing I've had
trouble
with (as I've added mods) is fuel cut, and that's not a shudder, it's
a
slam. Worse than the rev limiter kicking in, which I've had happen a
number
of times. However, it could be that's because I'm hanging on for dear
life,
with the stereo blasting, and there's a shit eating grin plastered on
my
face. :-)
However, next time he's out from under cover, I'll
turn down the stereo and
pay attention. Question...is this happening in all
gears?
Looking forward...Chris
P.S...as Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)
once quipped, "Too old to rock n' roll,
too young to die". I may be playing
Celine Dion on my stereo right now, but
I still have that "need for
speed". :-)
P.P.S...while I'm at it, for those of you in the
electronics world, I've
always compared throttle to digital versus analog. A
car like ours really
only needs a digital throttle, WOT or idle (on or off).
Analog should be
reserved for buses and little old ladies.
